Well, as if you had any doubts that Mitch McConnell is and forever will be an established creature of the swamp, here it is.
Ahead of what’s apparently going to be President Donald Trump’s triple-historic impeachment trial in the Senate McConnell just went ahead and blamed the outgoing POTUS for being responsible for the actions of the group of Trump supporters and leftist agitators who stormed Capitol Hill earlier this month.
“The mob was fed lies,” the Republican Senate leader declared. “They were provoked by the president and other powerful people, and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like.”
He went on to assure there would be a “safe and successful” inauguration of Biden on Wednesday since, you know, there’s tens of thousands of National Guard troops deployed on the ground in Washington, D.C.
On Wednesday, shortly after Biden is sworn into office, three new Democrat senators will be sworn in as members of the upper chamber and Democrat Senate Leader Chuck Schumer will take charge of the impeachment trial.
This marks the first time a president has been impeached twice, the first time a president has been impeached after leaving office, and the first time the House has impeached a president without conducting investigatory hearings first.
Schumer says that the Senate must set a precedent that the “severest offense ever committed by a president would be met by the severest remedy provided by the Constitution — impeachment,” and should be disbarred from holding office in the future.
One has to wonder if the Democrats will survive their political crucifixion of President Trump. It’s certainly not making his millions of supporters any happier with the status quo.
